Oil extractor vs. drain plug, finally switched after 8 years

Used to crawl under my 2004 Tacoma every 3,000 miles. Drain plug, crush washer, catch pan. Messy every time. Last spring I slipped on spilled oil in my driveway in Charlotte. Bruised my hip real bad. My buddy at the shop loaned me his oil extractor pump. Pulled the dipstick tube, sucked it all out in 10 minutes. No crawling, no pan, no mess. Bought a $45 one off Amazon last month. Still do the plug every other change to clear the bottom sludge. But for quick swaps, extractor wins. Anyone else make the switch and keep the plug for backups?

Last Saturday my friend Dave said he could swap my oil in 20 minutes, easy. He had this old floor jack from his dad and a socket set that looked like it survived a fire. Needed to do the lower control arm bolts on my 2011 F150 last weekend. Harbor Freight had one for $29, Snap-on was like $300. I bought the cheap one, clicked it at 148 ft-lbs, and the bolt snapped clean. Good thing I had a spare junkyard arm. I get the 'buy once cry once' thing now, but man, is there a reliable middle ground brand for a home guy? Or do I just rent from AutoZone next time?

Had a knocking noise from the front end for like 2 months, thought it was ball joints or something serious. Turned out to be the sway bar links, $26 for both at the parts store and about an hour with a breaker bar. I noticed a lot of folks on here always jump to bushings or struts first, but the links have those little rubber boots that crack and let water in. Wiggled the bar with the wheels off the ground and there it was, dead obvious. Anyone else had a simple fix turn out to be way cheaper than they expected?

The one mistake I see people make with battery terminals every time

I have been helping friends and neighbors with car batteries for years now. The one thing I keep seeing is people putting the grease on after they connect the terminal. That misses the whole point. You need to clean both the post and the clamp down to bare metal first, then put the grease on before you tighten it. The grease stops air and moisture from getting between the metal parts. If you smear it on after, the connection is already starting to corrode underneath. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just being picky about it?

That old steering wheel puller cost me 4 hours

I was swapping a steering wheel on my 91 Miata last Saturday. The rental tool from AutoZone just wouldn't fit right, kept slipping off the threads. After fighting it for three hours I finally gave up and drove to Harbor Freight. Spent 12 bucks on their generic puller and had the wheel off in 15 minutes. I was driving home from work last Tuesday and glanced down right as the numbers hit 200,000. My 2003 Toyota Corolla has been through three alternators and a cracked radiator but the engine still purrs. Then I watched a video about using a big syringe and some tubing to push fluid from the bleeder screw back up. Ngl I bought a 60ml syringe for $8 and some vinyl hose and it worked on the first wheel. The fluid came out clean with zero bubbles and my pedal feels solid now. Has anyone else tried the push method instead of the traditional pump and hold?

Looked it up online and found out the rubber seal can dry out and let moisture in if you dont move the car regularly. The piston was all crusty and stuck solid. I spent like 3 hours with a C clamp and some brake fluid trying to free it up before I just gave up and bought a rebuilt caliper for 40 bucks at AutoZone. Never really thought about how the brakes need to be exercised like everything else. Anyone else had a caliper lock up from sitting too long?

Paid $60 for a used oil filter cutter and man did it save me

I picked up one of those Lisle filter cutters at a swap meet a couple months ago. Needed it to check for metal in my 5.3 after a ticking noise started. Cut open two filters so far and found nothing scary, so I didn't tear down the engine for nothing. Saved me a weekend of work and probably a couple hundred in gaskets. TIL I was torquing my lug nuts all wrong for 10 years

After my front wheel started wobbling on I-75 last week, I pulled over and checked the torque. They were at 140 foot-pounds on a car that specs 80. I realized I'd been using a click wrench wrong this whole time and never letting it reset to zero before storing.
