Spent 3 hours chasing a brake squeal that was a rock stuck in the dust shield
Last Saturday I pulled all four wheels off my wife's minivan in the driveway because of this awful squeal every time she turned left. I checked pad thickness, greased the slide pins, even bled the brakes thinking maybe air got in, and nothing changed. Turned out a little pebble about the size of a pea was wedged between the rotor and the dust shield on the passenger front, and it fell out the second I poked it with a screwdriver. Three hours of work for a rock. Has anyone else had a noise trick them into a full brake job that wasn't needed?
Had the same thing happen on my truck and the noise went away the second I sprayed the shield area with a hose. Now the first thing I do with any mystery squeal is pull the wheel and look for debris before touching anything else. Takes five minutes and has saved me a lot of wasted Saturdays.
