inThis one thing newer mechanics keep getting wrong about leveling switches
That's a fair point about training being the real issue, but I gotta ask you this. When you watch those young guys coming up, how many of them are actually getting hands on time with a senior mechanic who breaks down the whole gap and tolerance thing, or are they mostly learning from YouTube and just guessing? Because the kid I saw in Pittsburgh had a tablet with a service manual pulled up, but he still missed the obvious feel of the cam resistance. Are you seeing any shops actually running formal classes on that adjustment feel, or is it still just learn on the job and hope for the best?

inDebate: did controller retrofits actually improve ride quality or just add complexity?
Oh MAN does this ever remind me of something! A buddy of mine works maintenance at this old office building downtown and they put in one of those new digital controllers last year. The thing was a NIGHTMARE for months, jerking around at every floor like it was learning to drive stick shift. Turns out the installers used the default settings from some OTHER building's elevator profile and just LEFT it that way. My buddy spent three weekends tinkering with the dip switches and firmware settings himself just to get it to stop slamming into the floor pads. He said the deceleration curve was literally copied from a high rise hotel system that had way newer hydraulics. Meanwhile the old relay box they ripped out never had a single issue for twenty years, just clunked along smooth as butter. These digital boxes are great when they're dialed in right, but it's RARE to find a tech who actually takes the time to do it proper.

inAppreciation post: visiting IKEA for the first time in 5 years
Did you actually try the new hinges before writing them off? I get where you're coming from on the cost, but I swapped mine out last month and it honestly changed how much I enjoy using my kitchen. The soft close isn't a gimmick to me, it keeps my kids from slamming doors and waking up the baby. Yeah, it took a few hours, but that's time well spent if it means I don't have to replace whole cabinets for another ten years. Plus the old hinges were starting to squeak and feel loose, so this was a cheap fix compared to a full remodel. Have you had a bad experience with soft close hardware breaking down?
