Last Wednesday I hit the discount meat shelf at Kroger right when the butcher was stocking it, grabbed the bag and froze them in 2-pound portions for easy meals. Anyone else find a crazy deal like that lately?

My Aunt's tip about using cold butter in pie crust flopped hard

My aunt swore up and down that using butter straight from the fridge was the secret to flaky pie crust. I tried it for a Thanksgiving pie last month and ended up with these weird hard lumps of butter that never mixed in right. The crust baked up tough and greasy in spots instead of flaky. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a family member that totally backfired?

Old timer told me to stop fighting the grain and it saved my trim work

I was installing some pine casing in a house built in the 50s over in Oak Park. Kept getting tear-out on the miter saw and was about to throw the whole board across the garage. A retired carpenter neighbor walked over and said 'you're running the blade backwards to the grain, flip your cut.' Switched to cutting with the finish side facing up and the blade spinning into that face. Took about 10 test cuts to get the feel right but now I barely get any chipping. Anybody else have a simple tip from an older guy that totally changed their approach?

I was looking up coop plans last week and found this blog from a guy named Dave who kept 6 hens in his Bushwick backyard. The last post was from August 2001 talking about how his rooster kept waking the neighbors. I tried emailing the address listed but it bounced back. Has anyone else found old homesteading blogs that are still sitting there untouched?

Bought a bulk lot of expired film on eBay. Big mistake.

Saw a deal for 30 rolls of Portra 160 for $40. Thought I was being smart. Got them in the mail and half the canisters were rusty. Developed 3 rolls and every single one came back blank or with weird color shifts. That's $12 in development down the drain plus the $40. Anyone else get burned by cheap expired film?

Found out my 1970s adobe walls are held together with mud and horsehair

Pulled off some old drywall in my kitchen last weekend. Saw the original adobe bricks underneath. Looked close and there's actual horsehair poking out of the mud mortar. Found an article from UNM's architecture library that says that's how they did it here up through the 50s. Bricks are basically sun-dried earth, straw, and manure mixed in. Crazy to think my house is standing on stuff my grandpa could have made in his backyard. Has anyone else found weird old materials in their reno?

Took me 3 years to realize my table saw blade was on backwards

I was at a job site last Tuesday helping a buddy frame his basement, and he walks over, looks at my saw, and goes "dude, your teeth are pointing the wrong way." I've been running my Skil 10 inch blade backwards for like 3 years. I always thought it was just dull because it was burning everything and kicking back like crazy. I even bought a new blade last month thinking the old one was shot. Soon as he flipped it around, the thing cut through a 2x4 like butter, no joke. Has anyone else had one of those facepalm moments where you realize you've been doing some basic tool setup wrong for way too long?
