Lost a whole day of editing because I forgot to hit save

I was at a coffee shop in Austin last Tuesday, working on a video project. Had like 3 hours of color grading done. Then my laptop battery died. Opened it back up and realized I'd been working in a temp file that never saved. The autosave was set to 30 minutes but the file got corrupted. I spent the next 4 hours redoing everything from a rough export. Now I check my save folder every 15 minutes. Has anyone else had a software glitch wipe out hours of work like that?

Thought it would give me a mirror finish on 6061 aluminum but instead I got chatter marks that ruined the whole part. Learned real quick that sometimes too light of a cut lets the tool rub instead of cut. Has anyone else found a sweet spot for finish passes on softer metals?

Question about mixing drywall compound for small patches

I used to just open a bucket of premixed all-purpose for every little nail pop repair but it always cracked on me. Tried adding a splash of water and mixing it with a drill for 60 seconds and now my patches look smooth as anything. Anyone else notice premixed needs thinning way more than the bucket says?

PSA: I spent 3 months cooking dry lentils before I figured out the trick

I got really into making lentil soup last winter cause it's cheap and filling, right? But every batch came out kinda crunchy and bland no matter how long I simmered them. I'd soak em overnight, cook em for an hour, still like little pebbles. Turns out I was using old lentils from a bulk bin I bought back in August at the Winco in town. They must have been sitting on the shelf forever cause fresh ones cook in like 20 minutes flat. Also I learned you gotta salt them at the end not the beginning or they stay tough. I felt so dumb when my neighbor told me after I complained about it for months. Has anyone else wasted time and money on pantry staples that were past their prime?

Tried drying my phone in a bag of rice and it actually got worse

I dropped my phone in a puddle last Tuesday and panicked. Stuck it in a bag of jasmine rice for 24 hours like everyone says. When I pulled it out, there was rice dust all in the charging port and the speaker sounded crackly. Turns out rice does nothing for moisture and just adds debris. Tried a new trick for keeping my sourdough starter active during a vacation

I was going to be gone for 8 days and didn't want to ask a neighbor to feed it. I mixed 20 grams of starter with 100 grams of water and 100 grams of whole wheat flour, let it sit out for an hour, then stuck the whole jar in the back of my fridge. When I got home, it was a bit gray on top but one feeding brought it right back to life. Has anyone else tried a long cold nap for their starter? How long did yours last?
