Recapped the power supply board with some Nichicon caps from Mouser, took about 2 hours, and now it sounds clean as a whistle. Anyone else notice how much life these old units have after a basic recap?

He said he's been writing it for 4 years and considers that a success because he gets real comments from people who actually try his tips. What do you consider a win for a tiny blog that nobody knows about - numbers or genuine engagement?

I finally admitted my contractor was right about spray foam insulation

About 8 months ago my contractor kept pushing me to go with spray foam in the attic of my 1950s bungalow near Nob Hill. I fought him on it hard because I'd read online that it traps moisture and can rot your roof decking. Plus it costs like $2,800 more than fiberglass batts for my 1200 square foot attic. Well I went with fiberglass and now my utility bills are through the roof literally because my upstairs stays freezing in winter and boiling in summer. I called him back last week and he showed me the infrared readings from my attic floor. Huge cold spots everywhere. I'm seriously considering ripping it all out and doing the foam right. Has anyone else had to eat crow on a reno decision like this? What did it cost you to fix it?

Why does nobody talk about old Angelfire sites for vintage recipe collections

Last week I was trying to find my grandma's banana bread recipe and her copy was all stained up. I remembered she used to post stuff on an old Angelfire page back in 1999. The site still works somehow! It had 23 recipes with animated gifs of dancing food and a guestbook that still loads. I copied them all into a doc before the host finally breaks. Has anyone else stumbled across a totally forgotten site that still has useful stuff on it?

Vent: People keep slapping stucco patch over cracked foundation slabs

I see it every other week on this sub. Someone posts a photo of a foundation crack and five people chime in saying just use some stucco patch. That's not how concrete works. A 1/8 inch crack in a slab will just crack through whatever you put on top of it within a season. I spent three summers working for a guy in the South Valley who drilled and epoxy-injected every single crack we touched. It takes longer and costs more but the fix actually stays. How do you all deal with these hairline cracks that keep coming back through the patch?

Overheard a customer say 'can't you just Google it' to a guy in our shop

This guy brought in a tower that wouldn't post, beeping 3 times long. My coworker started explaining RAM diagnostics, and the customer's friend pipes up with 'can't you just Google the beep codes?' Like yeah, we know that, but we also know 90% of the time it's a seating issue or a dead stick, not some mystery. I took over and fixed it in 5 minutes by reseating both sticks and blowing out a slot that had a dead cricket leg in it. The friend didn't say a word after that. Has anyone else had a customer or friend try to 'help' by suggesting the obvious?

Diving in the Gulf without a comms box back in the 80s

I got my start diving in the Gulf of Mexico around 1984. Back then we used hardwire comms from a topside box that weighed maybe 40 pounds. You had to run a physical cable down the umbilical and if it snagged on a platform leg, you lost communication for a few minutes until you sorted it out. Now I work mostly inland and use a wireless diver communication unit that clips right onto my harness. The unit costs about $300 and works clear for a hundred feet underwater. The old way taught you patience but I sure don't miss hauling that heavy box around. Has anyone else seen the switch from wired to wireless on their jobs?
