Tried to record a song on a 4-track cassette recorder last weekend and the tape got eaten after 3 takes

I found a Tascam 424 at a thrift store for $20 and thought it would be fun to make a lo-fi beat. Spent 2 hours trying to sync a drum machine to it and the tape just snapped when I hit stop. Anyone else waste a whole afternoon on old gear that barely works?

Totally agree, the whole thing is basically a battle and that's why it feels good when it works. I spent like four hours last weekend trying to get an old RadioShack mixer to stop buzzing, I ended up wrapping the power cord in aluminum foil like some kind of crackpot. The tape door on my Fostex won't close unless you smack it just right, and the VU meters are stuck at zero no matter what. But then I finally got a single drum loop to record without clipping and I felt like a genius for a solid five minutes. It's like the gear is testing you, you know? If you don't earn it, you don't deserve the vibe.

But isn't the struggle kind of the whole point of using old gear?
