Found a trick for setting posts in rocky soil without a digger

Been working a job up near Flagstaff last week and the ground is basically solid rock mixed with gravel. My normal auger kept bouncing off and I was getting nowhere. Tried filling the hole with water and letting it soak overnight before digging, and it softened the clay enough to get through. Has anyone else used this trick for tough soil or do you just switch to a different method entirely?

Debate: should you keep every weird bookmark or clean them out regularly?

I have a folder of bookmarks from 2015 that includes a live webcam of a pigeon nest and a guide to fixing a toaster that I don't even own anymore. My buddy says I'm a hoarder and should delete anything I haven't opened in a year, but I keep thinking I'll need that random "how to fold a fitted sheet" video again. Do you lean toward keeping all the weird stuff for nostalgia or purging everything that's not useful right now?

Found a weird hack for checking foundation cracks in Charlotte

I bought a 1950s house in Dilworth last year and saw some hairline cracks in the basement wall. My inspector told me to try taping a piece of plastic wrap over the crack for a week to see if moisture collects inside. Did that last month and sure enough, the plastic was wet on the inside so now I know it's leaking. Anyone else tried this simple test before calling a foundation guy?

Had a brutal week fixing four Olympus OM-1s in a row

Every single one had a different issue - sticky shutter, fungus in the viewfinder, broken light seal, and a dead meter. Has anyone else dealt with that many of the same model coming in at once?

Found out the hard way about dryer vent cleaning last month

I did a job in a 1970s house in Phoenix where the dryer took 3 cycles to dry a load. Pulled the vent apart and found a massive lint clog and a dead bird. Has anyone else run into animals blocking dryer ducts?

I finally got the neighborhood to join a compost drop-off

Been trying to get a compost system going for months. Nobody wanted the hassle. Then a lady from the local garden club told me to just start a single bin and let people dump their scraps there. No sign-ups, no rules. Two weeks later I got 6 neighbors bringing me eggshells and coffee grounds. My garden beds are loving it. Anyone else had luck with a no-pressure approach like that?

That whole 'just replace the cap' shortcut has cost me more time than it saved

I keep running into people who swap out a bulging capacitor on a board like that's the whole fix, but they skip checking the traces under it. Last month a guy brought me a 2007 Samsung plasma power supply where he did exactly that and missed a burnt-out via about 2 inches down the line. How do you even diagnose a problem if you won't grab a multimeter and follow the voltage path?

Had to pick between a cheap multimeter and borrowing a Fluke on a Navy contract job last month

I was on this quick turnaround job at a hangar in Norfolk, doing some troubleshooting on an old P-3 Orion. My own multimeter just died that morning, battery leaked all over, and the only options were a beat up $15 one from the gas station or asking the lead tech to borrow his personal Fluke. I figured the gas station one would give me false readings or just crap out, so I swallowed my pride and went to the lead. He handed it over, gave me this look like 'don't scratch it,' and sure enough it got me straight to a bad ground in the nav antenna relay. Took maybe 20 minutes total. That $15 meter would have had me chasing ghosts for hours. Anyone else had to decide between trusting cheap gear or borrowing from a grumpy senior tech?

Saw a stat that 9 out of 10 anvils are fakes or damaged

I was digging through some old blacksmithing forums last night (you know, the deep archive stuff) and found this survey from 2019 that said 9 out of 10 anvils sold online are either cast iron fakes or have hidden cracks. That really got under my skin because I paid $500 for mine from a guy on Craigslist in Seattle, and now I’m worried it’s one of those. The post said most people don’t even check the rebound or ring test before buying. Has anyone else here gotten burned on a bad anvil?

Tried butter vs shortening in my pie crust last weekend and the butter blew it out of the water

The shortening crust came out tough and bland while the butter one was flaky and rich, has anyone else had that same result with holiday pies?
