Walked into a new build yesterday and saw the worst wire mess I've ever come across

I was doing a final walkthrough on a 4,200 sq ft house in Beaverton before handing it over to the homeowner. The builder let his electrician run all the low voltage stuff and it looked like spaghetti thrown at a wall. No clips, no ties, just wires hanging everywhere behind the panel. I spent 45 minutes cleaning it up just so I could feel good about leaving my name on it. Has anyone else had to redo someone else's lazy work before the client even moves in?

Had to choose between a vintage Dremel and a new one at a garage sale last month

I was at this garage sale in Portland and this old guy had two rotary tools sitting on a table. One was this beat up Dremel 260 from the 70s with a frayed cord and the other was a brand new looking Craftsman one still in the box. He wanted $15 for the old one and $20 for the new one. I went with the old Dremel cause I figured they don't make em like that anymore. Got it home, plugged it in, and it ran smooth but the chuck was stripped so I spent two hours trying to find a replacement collet online. Still haven't found one that fits. The new one would have been fine but now I'm stuck with a paperweight that looks cool. Anyone else get suckered by vintage tools that just end up being a hassle?

My neighbor's tile advice actually worked out

I was retiling my backsplash in my kitchen off Central and my neighbor Mike who does tile on the side told me to backbutter every single tile even the small ones. I thought he was being extra and I almost skipped it because it takes forever. But I did it his way and after three days I haven't had a single tile pop loose or feel hollow when I tap it. I used a 1/4 inch notch trowel and some cheap porcelain from Home Depot so the adhesive was the only thing that could go wrong. He also said to use a leveling system with those plastic wedges and I thought it was unnecessary but the grout lines are dead straight now. Has anyone else had a neighbor's tip that turned out better than what they read online?

A guy at the local hardware store spent 15 minutes showing me how to sharpen my chisels with a simple jig he made from scrap wood.

He said 'most folks overthink it' and now I get a mirror finish in about 3 minutes per blade, has anyone else tried a homemade jig for sharpening?

That $300 tool presetter I laughed at actually saved my butt

I was so sure those cheap digital tool presetters were a gimmick. Been setting tools by eye for 15 years at my shop in Denver and thought I had it down. Finally caved after losing a $400 endmill to a .005 offset error on a rush job last Tuesday. Ran a test batch of 50 parts after using it and had zero scrap for the first time in months. It's not magic or anything but it catches my dumb mistakes before they hit the spindle. Any of you guys use one regularly or still just bump the tool off the stock?

Appreciation post: picking the hardback over paperback for my club's pick this month

I went with the hardback even though it cost $12 more because the paperback had tiny font that hurts my eyes... turns out the thicker paper stopped my highlighter from bleeding through to the other side during our discussion. Has anyone else found a physical book detail that made or broke their reading experience?

Showerthought: Spending $25 on a used book of classic debate fallacies completely changed how my club argues

I dropped $25 at a library sale on 'The Art of the Argument' by a random old professor, thinking it'd be a dry read. It actually gave us a cheat sheet for spotting straw man and ad hominem attacks mid-conversation, and our last two meetings were way more productive. Has anyone else found a cheap resource that leveled up their group discussions like that?

Used to think a cable tie on every anvil tool was overkill

I always thought those guys who zip tie their hammers and tongs to the anvil stand were just being extra. Figured I'd remember where everything goes. Then last month I was working on a set of three matching fireplace pokers for a customer in Boise. Must have grabbed the wrong hammer 15 times in one afternoon because they all looked the same in my hand. Now every single hammer head has a colored zip tie on it matching a sticker on the shelf above my anvil. Red for the 2lb cross peen, blue for the rounding hammer, yellow for the ball peen. Saves me maybe 30 seconds each swap but over a 6 hour shift that adds up to a lot of heat still in the steel. Anyone else color code their tools or do you just memorize by feel?

Tried running Facebook ads with zero targeting and no custom audiences for a month

Everyone says you need laser focused targeting, but my $200 test on a local coffee shop in Austin got 4x the engagement just by letting the algorithm figure it out itself, anyone else found broad targeting works better?

Had a writing group member say my dialogue felt like two robots talking at each other...

Her exact words were 'people don't answer questions they just deflect or go off on tangents' so now I write every conversation with at least one interruption or non-answer per exchange, has anyone else gotten a critique that completely rewired their process?
