Same thing happens with YouTube, I went looking for a recipe once and ended up watching a 40 minute video about restoring old tractors. @eric_price you nailed it with the time capsule thing, those dead forums are like finding a note in a bottle. Learned the hard way that garage sale guys are basically pros at making junk sound interesting. Went to an estate sale last month and the lady running it told me a box of "old home movies" had some kind of family drama on it, so I paid $40 on the spot. Got home and it was just 6 hours of some dude filming his lawn. Not even the good kind of weird, just grass. Anyway my rule now is I open every single tape and check it right there in front of them, no matter how awkward it gets. If they won't let me look, I walk. Saves me a lot of sad drives home.
