Serious question, how do you handle a client who wants a drastic cut but has super damaged ends?

I had a client yesterday who wanted to go from mid-back to a chin-length bob, but her ends were fried from years of box dye and heat styling... like, snapping off in my comb fried. Instead of just cutting it all off at once, I did a 'dusting' pass first, taking off maybe half an inch to an inch to get the absolute worst off. Then I sectioned and cut the bob shape, but I cut it about an inch longer than the final goal. After that, I went back in with my shears and point-cut into the ends to remove more damage without losing the shape. It saved so much length and she was thrilled. Anyone have a different method for this kind of situation?
