Wait, he told you to break your own code on purpose? That part blows my mind because my first instinct is always to protect what little working code I have and never touch it. Like I finally get something to run after an hour and the last thing I want to do is mess with it. But the IndexError thing makes sense, I used to just copy fixes from Stack Overflow without reading why they worked. Maybe deleting a line here and there just to see what blows up is actually the move. How long did it take before stuff stopped feeling like total guesswork?

The guy at the flea market in Reno sold me a Palm Pilot for $7 and showed me his whole system

Scored a Palm m105 at a garage sale for five bucks a few years back and went down the same rabbit hole. Graffiti actually clicks after a week or two, and the Sunday sync thing is real, my dad still does his whole life on one of those. For Windows 11 the old Palm Desktop is a pain but there's a patch floating around that gets it working, though your mileage may vary.
