I finally found an old cached version of that DIY solar panel guide from 2009, and it's the only reason I didn't screw up my install

Everyone keeps linking to that newer site that replaced it, but the original had a wiring diagram that saved me $300 in fried components. Has anyone else had luck finding these old cached gems, or am I the only one still digging through Archive.org for this stuff?

I still remember when hanging beef meant dry aging in a real cooler, not just throwing a bag over it

Back in the 90s at my first shop in Pittsburgh, we had this walk-in that would hit 34 degrees perfect and we'd hang sides for 21 days with nothing but air and patience, now every new guy I train looks at me funny when I say we don't need those Cryovac bags for everything.

Saw a guy use a spirit level from 1975 on a job last week

Ngl, it made me think about how we all rely on laser levels now. I was working on a garden wall in Brighton and this older bloke pulled out this beat up wooden level and his lines were straighter than mine. Has anyone else noticed the old tools just feel better in the hand?

That one Tuesday I tried drying laundry on a line vs using the dryer and the neighbor's cat claimed everything

Used to just throw everything in the dryer on high until I grabbed a shirt off the line last week and realized my clothes didn't smell like burnt dust anymore, has anyone else noticed a huge difference in how long their stuff lasts after making the switch?

My blog got 12 visitors last month and 9 of them were me

I started a blog about fixing old mechanical keyboards back in February. First month I got 4 views from random people and thought okay cool. Last month I checked analytics and saw 12 total visitors but 9 of those were me checking if the site worked. The other 3 were probably bots since they bounced in 2 seconds. Anybody else get hyped over a single real person commenting on like post 47?

Swapped my hostel bunk for a homestay in Medellin and I'm not going back

I always thought hostels were the only way to save money traveling, but a local guy in Medellin offered me a room for $12 a night with free breakfast. After two weeks of noisy dorms and slow wifi, the quiet space and home-cooked meals actually cost less than my hostel per week. Has anyone else tried homestays instead of hostels for budget trips?

Tried a 3-tier cake for my sister's wedding and watched the middle layer slide off

I was at my apartment in Austin last Saturday, attempting a lemon raspberry cake for my sister's reception. The bottom tier was 10 inches, middle was 8, and top was 6. I used cheap cardboard rounds and forgot to chill the ganache between stacking, so the middle layer just slid right off onto the counter after 20 minutes. Had to scrape everything down, made cupcakes instead, and they actually turned out fine. Anybody else had a cake collapse right before a big event?

PSA: Stop blind trusting your oven temp dial

I ruined 3 batches of croissants last month before I finally stuck an oven thermometer in there. My dial said 375 but it was actually bouncing between 340 and 410. Has anyone else found a huge swing in their home oven?

I think the claw hammer is overrated for most framing work

I used to only use a curved claw hammer for everything, like my grandpa taught me. Around 5 years ago I switched to a straight rip hammer for framing and I never looked back. The rip claw pulls nails way better and pries boards apart cleaner. I was on a job in Tulsa last summer and the other guys all laughed at my hammer until I pulled a stuck nail out in one shot. Now three of them switched too. Has anyone else tried a straight claw and stuck with it?

The Portland Zine Symposium made me rethink my whole layout process

I was at the Portland Zine Symposium last year and saw a table where someone had made a zine using just a single sheet of paper folded into 8 pages. I'd always used a 12-page saddle stitch, so this was a big change. It made me realize I could make a whole story with less paper and still have it feel complete. Has anyone else tried making a one-sheet zine and have tips for planning the layout?

Started watching The Bear and now I can't watch any other cooking shows

People keep saying stuff like this and I wonder what show they were watching before. The Bear is good television, sure, but it didnt invent stress or yelling in kitchens. Plenty of shows have done the whole intense chaos thing without everyone acting like it changed the game. Feels like people just got caught up in the hype because it looks fancy with the camera work and long takes. At the end of the day its still just a show about people working in a restaurant. Not exactly groundbreaking material.

Chipped in 200 bucks for a fancy diagnostic scanner and it paid off in one day

The Launch X431 is no joke for the money, I've seen a few guys at the shop using them and the live data is way faster than I expected for a $600 unit. It's crazy how far the cheaper brands have come in just the last couple years.
