Vent: spent $9 on lunch every workday for a month and did the math on a napkin
That came out to $180, and when I finally packed leftovers from Sunday's $12 pot of chili for all five days instead, my grocery bill dropped by almost $150, so now I'm wondering what cheap meals actually hold up well by Friday without getting soggy.
I read somewhere that the trick is keeping the sauce and the starch separate until you actually eat it, which sounds like a pain (and honestly, who has time for that at 6am) but it really does work. Things like chili, curry, and pulled meat hold up great because they actually taste better by day three or four. The stuff that gets gross is anything with rice or pasta mixed in already, since it just soaks up everything and turns to mush. What I do now is cook a big pot of something saucy on Sunday, keep it in one container, and then make fresh rice or noodles each night since that only takes a few minutes. Cabbage and root veggies also stay crunchy way longer than spinach or lettuce, so those are safer bets for later in the week.
