Used to map out every meal spot before a trip, now I just ask the person behind the counter at the first place I see
For a long time I was the guy with a saved list of 30 restaurants for a weekend trip, cross-checked against reviews and opening hours, usually an hour of scrolling on Thursday night. Now I show up, find one spot that looks busy with locals, and just ask whoever is working where they eat on their day off. Last month in Providence I did this at a tiny bakery on Federal Hill and the woman at the register pointed me to a Portuguese place three blocks away with no sign out front, and it was the best meal of the trip for $14. The list version of me would have never found it because it had maybe nine reviews online. I think the change happened when I got burned by a bunch of popular spots that were fine but not worth the hype. It also helps that asking a person gets you the stuff a review site never mentions, like which day to go or what's about to run out. Your mileage may vary depending on the town, since some folks just send you to their cousin's place. Does anyone here have a go-to way to strike up that conversation without it feeling rude?
