Appreciation post: The old apartment building on 5th Street finally got its wiring redone

Three houses ago I had a panel where the previous guy actually used Cat5e for phone lines and Cat6 for data but wired them both to the same patch panel with zero labels. Took me an hour with a tone tracer just to figure out which port went to the kitchen. So I gotta push back a little on calling it night and day with a new panel. Even a clean install can be a headache if the guy before you mixed up his cable types or didn't bother to test each run. A grid layout with clear markings helps, but you still have to double check everything because people make mistakes.

Hiked the section from Tuolumne Meadows to Yosemite Valley last week and the water crossings were way higher than expected

DUDE those crossings are NO joke right now. I did that same trail in late July and the water was up to my WAIST at that one spot near the bridge. I had to turn back because the current was just too strong for my comfort. People really need to check the real time flow data before heading out, not just assume it's fine.

Stumbled on a trick for setting up weekly spreads in 10 minutes flat

That paper clip trick is GENIUS. I've been using a binder clip the same way after seeing something similar and it cut my setup time in half.

Hostel private rooms vs budget hotels after 3 months of travel in Eastern Europe

it's wild how this "pay a little more for less hassle" thing shows up everywhere now, not just travel. i see it with people buying pre-cut veggies for triple the price, or paying for express shipping on stuff they don't even need fast. feels like we're all just burning cash for tiny bits of convenience that used to be free or normal. plus with hostels, the social vibe has gotten so weird post-covid, half the people just sit on their phones anyway. so yeah, ten bucks for actual quiet and real coffee sounds like a no-brainer in 2024.

I finally caved and tried the sponge finish on a big slab last week

Right, that article was a total game changer for me too lol. Still can't believe I was so sure about the other side before reading it. Feels like the whole thing was designed to make you feel smart for disagreeing until you actually see the evidence. Funny how a few well placed facts can flip your whole opinion around. Must be nice being so confident about it before, I'm just glad I finally got out of that hole.
