Tried those vintage lens adapter rings and thought they'd be junk
I bought a cheap M42 to Canon EF adapter off eBay for like 8 bucks. Figured it would be loose or mess up the focus distance. But I slapped it on my old Pentax screw mount lens and it clicked right on solid as a rock. The pictures came out sharp with no light leaks through the gap. Anyone else find a cheap tool that actually did the job right?

Yeah that's basically the same with me. I got a cheap Nikon F to Sony E mount ring for like five bucks and figured it would be a total waste of money. But it fit perfect, no wobble at all, and my old 50mm from the 70s works like a charm on my digital body now. Good cheap finds like that are rare but they definitely exist.

Nah I gotta disagree, you lucked out big time. Most of those five dollar adapters have uneven tolerances and you end up with focus shift or infinity focus being off by a mile, I've seen it happen to three different friends.
