Critique from an old-timer in Portland about my pruning cuts stung bad but fixed my whole approach

He told me I was leaving stubs on every branch and after I watched him make a clean collar cut on a 20-foot maple in under 30 seconds I went home and re-did all my last week's work.

Unpopular opinion: bad screenshots with typos are funnier than clean edits

Overheard some guy at a coffee shop yesterday saying he spends 20 minutes cropping and editing his screenshots until they look perfect. I think that kills the whole point. The best fails I've seen are the ones where someone clearly took a photo of their screen with a potato phone and the text is all blurry. That raw energy hits different.

Spent $400 on a hydraulic wood splitter for my side gig and it paid itself off in two weekends

Everyone told me to stick with a manual maul for splitting firewood, said it builds character. But after three weekends of wrecking my shoulder on red oak, I rented a 20-ton splitter for $80 and bought my own the next week. Has anyone else found that spending money on a mechanized tool early just saves your body for the long run?

Can we talk about how hard it is to find dead blog recommendations?

Last week I spent 2 hours trying to find a blog about restoring 80s pinball machines that actually had tutorials. I'm talking deep cuts here, not the big sites everyone knows. Found one from 2012 with a broken link to the wiring diagram, and I'm still searching for a working source on that Gottlieb System 80 board. Anyone know a forum or blog that digs into those older machines?

Appreciation post: My old solid oak T-square finally broke after 12 years

I was laying out a set of cabinet plans last Tuesday and my trusty wooden T-square snapped right at the head joint. It had been through at least 15 different drafting projects and a move from Chicago to Denver without any issues before that. Has anyone else had to replace a favorite tool and found something that worked just as well?

Why does nobody talk about the cost of streaming services adding up for anime?

I dropped like $60 last month just on Crunchyroll, Hidive, and Netflix to keep up with seasonal shows and classics. That's almost what I spend on a good dinner for two, and half the time I'm scrolling more than watching. I get that they gotta pay for licenses and simuldubs but dang, it adds up quick when you want to watch more than just whatever is on one platform. I've tried sticking to just one service but then I miss out on shows that are exclusive elsewhere. Has anyone found a good way to rotate subscriptions or some kinda budget trick to not miss the stuff you care about?

Debate: Should you dial in feeds and speeds on the machine or on paper first?

Overheard two old timers arguing yesterday at a shop in Detroit, one swears by doing all the math on paper before touching the control while the other just tweaks everything on the fly at the machine. The paper guy said it saves him from scrapping parts and the on-the-fly guy said he gets done faster without overthinking it. Which side do you lean toward and has one way ever burned you?

TIL why old theater dimmers hum so loud

Was helping a buddy with a lighting upgrade at a 1920s theater downtown last month. We pulled the cover off an old resistance dimmer board and I finally got why those things sound like angry bees. The carbon discs were worn uneven and arcing every time the current passed through. Manager told us it had been humming for 15 years and nobody ever bothered to look. We swapped in a modern solid state rack and the silence was weird at first. Anybody else run into old dimmer setups that are just begging to be replaced?

Overheard a guy at the swap meet brag about flipping a rusty anvil for $300, but he didn't know it was a rare Peter Wright from the 1800s

I walked over and told him the markings on the side meant it was worth triple that, and he just shrugged and said 'profit's profit' - has anyone else seen treasures get undersold like that at a flea market?

Rented a thermal camera to find drafts before buying my first house - skeptic turned believer
