My $12 CRT from a rummage sale made me rethink my whole setup

A buddy came over last week and said my old TV looks better than his 4K for retro fighters, and he wasn't joking about the motion blur being less annoying. I snagged this 13 inch Sony Trinitron for 12 bucks in Madison and now I'm actually playing more games than I screenshot on my OLED. Anyone else keep a weird old screen around just because one friend made a comment that stuck?

That time a paint booth fan ate my lunch in Modesto

Last Tuesday I was spraying a fender in the booth at Martin's Auto Body here in Modesto, and the intake fan kicked on so hard it sucked my respirator hose clean off the hook and whipped it around like a snake. The hose smacked me in the face and flung a cup of hardener I left on the mixing cart clear across the floor, glass everywhere. Took me 20 minutes to clean up and I still can't find one of my good mixing sticks. Anybody else had a booth mishap that turned into a full cleanup drill?

A friend said my weekly spread was too cluttered, so I cut it down to 3 boxes

Last Sunday I showed my buddy who journals too and he just looked at my page and asked 'what am I even looking at here?' I had 8 sections, little doodles, three different highlighter colors. So I deleted everything and now I only keep three boxes: tasks, notes, and a small spot for one thing I want to finish. It feels empty but somehow I actually stick with it. Has anyone else had to shrink their layout after someone called it messy?

Appreciation post: that $2 o-ring kit saved my Friday

Had a Bosch dishwasher at a rental in Aurora dumping water everywhere, and the guy before me had replaced the whole pump instead of the door seal gasket. I grabbed a 20 cent o-ring from my assortment and it sealed right up. Anyone else carry a cheap o-ring kit for those calls where the part is obvious but the fix is tiny?

The county clerk site with 1998 design that held my deed hostage for 3 weeks

Found the official records portal for my county in Ohio still running on frames and a guestbook, and it took me 3 weeks plus a phone call to realize the PDF viewer only works in Internet Explorer mode. Is it better to leave these old government sites alone so they stay up, or should someone force an update even if it breaks the charm?

Wasted $85 on a magnetic sweep before I learned the hard way

Picked up one of those fancy magnetic chimney sweep kits off Amazon for $85, thought it would save me time on a tricky flue in an old house near Portland. Turns out it barely held onto the creosote chunks and the magnets just kept sticking to the damper plate, cost me two extra hours on site. I should've just stuck with my regular brush and rods setup, live and learn. Has anyone else tried those magnetic rigs and had them fail on a metal liner?

Overheard a guy at the equipment auction about bucket truck cable wear

Was at a Ritchie Bros auction outside Tulsa last Saturday and overheard two old timers talking about a 2019 bucket truck they were inspecting. One pointed at the boom cables and said, "See that fray? That's how you lose a bucket and a limb in the same afternoon." He said most guys check the lift cylinder but skip the cables until they snap, then they're paying for a hospital visit and a new truck. I've been running my own climbing gear for 12 years but never thought about the cable inspection side when I rent a lift. I went home and pulled the manual for my buddy's truck we use for deadwood jobs, and sure enough, the recommended check is every 30 hours, not whenever someone remembers. I've got a big job next week in a tight alley where a cable failure would drop the bucket right onto a fence and maybe a pedestrian. Has anyone else had a cable fail mid-run, or does everyone just trust the last guy's inspection sticker?
