I was grabbing shingles at ABC Supply in Denver yesterday and this older fella starts talking about how his company uses AI to scan satellite images and find weak spots on roofs before they leak. He said they caught a failing valley on a church roof that saved them like 12 grand in water damage. I always thought roof inspections were just walking the roof and poking at stuff. It hit me different cause I've been running my own crew for 8 years and never thought about using tech like that. Has anyone else come across AI tools for construction that aren't just marketing hype?

Got into pour over coffee six months ago and just now figured out why everyone raves about it

I was using a cheap blade grinder and pre-ground beans for the longest time. Thought it was all hype. Then I picked up a used Baratza Encore for $40 on Craigslist and started grinding fresh. The difference in flavor was night and day. Still not sure if I'm doing the pour technique right though. Anyone have a video they swear by?

Rant: I actually think using fresh yeast is way overrated for home bakers

I read a study from King Arthur Flour's website that said active dry yeast and instant yeast work just as well as fresh in 95% of cases if you handle them right. I tried fresh yeast for months and kept getting inconsistent rises because it’s so tricky to store. Does anyone else just stick with instant yeast and get better results?

I grabbed a pack of KMC quick links last week from the bin in the back, didn't think twice. Got home to swap a chain on a customer's hybrid and the thing wouldn't snap shut, it was for an 8 speed but the chain was actually 9. Turns out the packaging got mixed up on the shelf, I wasted 20 minutes wrestling with it. Anyone else find weird batch mismatches on these newer packs, or just my bad luck?

Rant: Laser levels vs the old water tube method on a sloped site

Honestly, I used to swear by my water level tube on every foundation job. It was slow and messy but it never lied, you know? Then we got a job on a steep slope near Austin last summer and I finally caved and bought a green rotary laser. That thing was a beast, kept a consistent line even in the direct sun. But then the batteries died halfway through the morning and the backup pair was dead in the truck. Had to grab the old hose from my truck bed while the laser sat there useless. The tube got the job done in about 20 extra minutes while my helper drove into town for more AAs. Has anyone else had a situation where the fancy tech just totally let you down on a hot day?

Spent $60 on a 'vintage' lamp from FB Marketplace and the wiring was all frayed inside

I saw this really cool 70s mushroom lamp on Facebook Marketplace for $60. Looked perfect in the photos, seller said it worked fine. Got it home, plugged it in, and it sparked real bad and tripped the breaker. Opened it up and the wires were basically crumbling inside the plastic. No way they didn't know about that. So I'm out $60 and now I gotta rewire the whole thing myself. Anyone else get burned by "vintage" electronics that were clearly broken?

Guy with a 1920s house in Providence pointed out I missed a hairline crack where the flue meets the crown. Ever since I started using a fog machine instead of just a flashlight, I catch way more small leaks.

Everyone says the cheap ones do the same job, but after three months of using that curved grip on tight corner work I haven't had a single blister, so has anyone else found a "luxury" tool that actually earned its keep?

Swapped to a Motive pressure bleeder after fighting with old vacuum pump for 2 hours

I was using a Mityvac vacuum bleeder on a 2018 F-150 and kept getting air bubbles no matter what I did. Wasted all morning cracking bleeders and still had a spongy pedal. A buddy brought over his Motive pressure bleeder and it was night and day difference. First try the pedal was rock solid and I was done in 20 minutes flat. Anyone else finally give up on vacuum bleeding and switch to pressure?
