Heads up about the custom print shop on Maple Street

I stopped by that new print place on Maple Street last Friday to get some flyers done. The guy running it was super nice, but their color matching was way off on my sample. I wanted a specific blue for a logo, and what came out looked more like a faded purple. He said their monitor calibration was 'a work in progress.' Has anyone else had color issues with a new shop before they get their systems dialed in?

I finally tried a different bevel angle on a 2-inch thick plate and it worked better

I was welding a patch on an old boiler in a plant here in Toledo, and the spec called for a 37.5 degree bevel on the joint. I've always just set my grinder to 30 degrees because that's what I was taught, but this time I actually measured it out. The fit-up was so much cleaner, and I used about 15% less filler rod on the root pass. It just sealed up smoother with less grinding afterward. Has anyone else found that hitting the exact bevel angle makes a bigger difference than they thought on thicker material?

I used to think a big yard was a must-have until a buyer in South End set me straight

I was showing a condo near the rail trail to a young couple, maybe in their late twenties. I kept pointing out how close the parks were, trying to sell the idea of 'shared green space' because the unit itself had no private yard. The guy just looked at me and said, 'Margaret, we work sixty hours a week. The last thing we want on a Sunday is another chore. We want to walk to a coffee shop, not mow grass.' It hit me right then. I was stuck in my own mindset, thinking everyone wanted what my generation did. I stopped leading with yard size for properties in areas like Plaza Midwood or NoDa. Now I ask people first what they actually do on weekends. Has anyone else had a client completely flip the script on what you thought was a selling point?

Looked back at my books and realized I've done over 300 glue-down jobs in the last two years

I was doing my year-end taxes and added up all the invoices. The number just jumped out at me, 312 separate glue-down carpet installs since the start of 2022. It surprised me because I always thought of myself as more of a stretch-in guy, you know? But the demand for that direct stick method, especially in commercial spaces and basements around here, has been huge. I guess it makes sense with all the concrete slab construction. It made me think about how much my tool kit has changed, I go through way more adhesive spreaders and knee kickers now. I'm curious, has anyone else seen their work shift heavily toward one method like that?
