Rant: That $8 I spent on a rusty old food court chair

Found this beat up chair from the closed food court at Granite Run Mall for 8 bucks at a flea market. Figured it'd be a cool piece for my garage. Got it home and the thing literally collapsed under me while I was sitting on it reading a magazine. Has anyone else wasted money on junk from mall liquidations that fell apart?

Took me 6 hours to figure out why my screen printer's registration was off by 3 millimeters

Turns out the pallet arm had a tiny burr under the clamp that I only found after taking the whole thing apart and running my finger across every surface, has anyone else had a print problem that ended up being something that small?

I finally listened to that guy at the gaming cafe who said local LLMs are overhyped for practical use

So back in February, I was at a small game dev meetup in Austin and this older developer kept telling me that running a local LLM like Llama 2 on my laptop would be more trouble than it's worth for generating NPC dialog. I thought he was just being a gatekeeper, you know? But after spending 3 weekends trying to get Ollama to work reliably with my Unity project (and crashing my system twice during a demo), I finally see he was right. The output was fine for single lines but totally inconsistent for longer conversations, and the setup time was brutal. Meanwhile I could have just used a simple cloud API for like $15 a month and gotten way better results. Has anyone else found that local models just aren't ready for real game dev workflows, or am I missing some secret trick?

Can we talk about how long it took me to fix a broken induction cooktop?

Honestly, I spent 3 hours reading forums and watching videos to fix my induction cooktop after a circuit board went bad. The repair shop quoted me $450, but I did it myself for $85 in parts. The worst part was tracking down the right capacitor at an electronics store across town. Took me two full weekends to figure out the soldering. Has anyone else dealt with these modern cooktops dying after just 4 years?

Got tangled in a sling line off Port Fourchon last Tuesday...

Last Tuesday I was doing a routine inspection on a platform leg near Port Fourchon, nothing crazy, just checking for marine growth and corrosion. I had my sling line set up perfect, but then a supply boat came through and kicked up the current... my line wrapped right around a loose cable from a previous job. Took me 20 minutes to get untangled, all while my air was running low because I was down at 80 feet. The visibility went to crap too, maybe 2 feet max, so I couldn't even see what I was doing. My tender was yelling at me on the comms but I couldn't hear half of it over the bubbles. Has anyone else run into abandoned cables or loose gear left on a job site? How do you deal with it?

Serious question, got a tip from an old saturation diver in Morgan City

I was working a job in Morgan City a few years back, tied up at the dock waiting on gear. An old saturation diver, probably mid-60s, saw me struggling with a stuck valve on a crossover hose. He walked over and said "son, get a strap wrench and some dish soap, not the fancy lube they sell." He showed me how to wet the threads with soap before reassembly, let it sit 5 minutes. That hose never gave me trouble again for the rest of the season. I still keep a bottle of Dawn in my tool box to this day. Has anyone else had a random tip from a vet diver that just stuck with you?

That spiral notebook from 2019 had a list of 47 things my mom worried about

I was cleaning out my garage last weekend and found this old spiral notebook I used for work notes back in 2019. Flipping through it, there was a page where I had scribbled down a list of 47 worries my mom told me about over dinner the night before. Stuff like 'will my hydrangeas survive the frost' and 'is the mailman mad at me for not tipping at Christmas.' It hit me that she spends so much time carrying small things that don't matter. Has anyone else found a random list in an old notebook that made you see someone in your life differently?

Had a guy at the tech meetup tell me 'AI art is just fancy clip art'

This was at the monthly meetup in Phoenix about six weeks ago. We were talking about generative models, and this older developer just waved his hand and said that. He argued it was all just remixing existing images without real understanding. It stuck with me because it showed a total lack of seeing the innovation in how these systems actually learn and create new compositions. I tried to explain the training process on datasets of millions of images, but he wasn't having it. Has anyone else run into this kind of dismissive attitude from someone who should know better?

Can we talk about how overrated AutoCAD's dynamic blocks are for production work?

Hard disagree. Dynamic blocks are a lifesaver once you actually figure out the constraints. Bet you could have saved that afternoon with a quick angular parameter and a lookup table instead of making three separate blocks.

Was I wrong about coolant concentration for years? Here is what tipped me off.

Man that is a brutal gut check right there. I have been there myself with a different fluid mix and it stings when you realize youve been off for so long. The rep coming by with that refractometer reading is like a little dose of reality you didnt ask for. For what its worth 12% is actually pretty standard in a lot of shops so you might have been closer to the sweet spot than you think. Water evaporates way faster than anyone accounts for especially if you run the machine hard or have a dry shop. I wouldnt beat yourself up about it too much just check it weekly with one of those cheap pocket refractometers and adjust as needed.

Had a chat with an old electrician that changed how I pull cable

That tip about twisting the fish tape is gold. Makes total sense when you think about it. I've seen guys yank on cable like they're trying to start a lawnmower, just straight pull until it binds up. A little rotation breaks the contact points, lets the tape slide instead of grind. Same principle as waxing a drawer runner or using lube on a drill bit. Simple physics, just nobody bothers to explain it.
