My buddy swears you should always strip wires by hand and I think that is how you burn a house down
Last week my friend Dan was helping me wire up a new outlet in my garage in Cheyenne and he grabbed my automatic strippers and called them a crutch. He said real electricians just use a knife and feel it out, and he nicked the copper on 3 of the 4 wires he stripped. I have been doing HVAC work for 11 years and I have seen way more meltdowns from deep nicks than from a tool that costs $18. A nick in stranded wire can drop the current it carries by a lot, and in a garage outlet pulling a space heater that heat builds up right where you cannot see it. I told him the tool is not cheating, it is just a gauge that keeps you from cutting too deep. Am I off base here or did anyone else get taught the knife and feel it thing?
