Had a weird moment with a part print last Thursday that made me think

I was running a batch of 304 stainless brackets on the Haas, the print called for a 0.005" chamfer on all sharp edges. I was deburring by hand after, like always, and it hit me. I've been adding that chamfer for years because the print says so, but I never asked what it's for. I called the engineer, and he said it's just to prevent cuts during assembly, no real tolerance need. Now I'm looking at all the callouts differently. Anyone else ever dig into the 'why' behind a simple spec and get a surprise?

Showerthought: I tried to press a book with a stack of old encyclopedias and a space heater.

I was finishing a small leather journal last week and my press was full. I had the bright idea to pile my grandpa's old World Book set on top, then put a small space heater nearby to 'help the glue set'. After about three hours, I came back to a very warm, very warped cover. The heat made the leather shrink and pull away from the boards. Learned that weight and heat are not the same as even pressure. Has anyone else had a DIY pressing plan go sideways?
