Yeah and it's not just monitors. Like trying to tune a guitar with a busted tuner, you'll never get it right and you'll just think you have a bad ear. Or using a dull knife in the kitchen, you fight the food instead of slicing it. Good tools don't make you skilled, but they let you see the real problem.

That bit about the thin, stiff blade giving more control makes total sense. My fancy scoring tool broke last month and I've been using a putty knife. It's the same idea. Those cheap hardware store tools are way tougher than craft store stuff. Sometimes the perfect tool is already in your junk drawer.
