Maybe the cracking helps them breathe better?

OMG my friend Sarah had this exact thing! She went to the doctor for a nasty chest cold and could barely take a deep breath. The doctor had her twist her upper body, and a huge pop came from her ribs. She said it was INSTANT, like a pressure valve opening, and she could finally get a full breath in. She swears that cracking saved her that week.
