My wife's friend from her book club made me rethink how I talk about our work
She asked me to explain what I do, and I just said 'I lay carpet.' She stopped me and said, 'No, you build the floor people live on. You make homes feel soft and quiet.' I've been doing this for 15 years and never thought of it that way. It hit different because she saw the art in it, not just the job. How do you guys describe what we do to people outside the trade?

I mean, I just say I lay carpet and that's fine by me.

Honestly, I gotta disagree. Saying you "lay carpet" sells the whole job short. It's skilled work, man. You're measuring, cutting, stretching, and making seams disappear. That's a legit craft. Calling it just laying carpet feels like you're downplaying what you actually know how to do.
