That fancy $150 Japanese chisel I dropped on concrete after 10 minutes
Bought a single high end chisel from a specialty tool shop near Portland for $150. Thought I was hot stuff until I knocked it off my bench and it hit the concrete floor point first. Chipped the edge so bad I had to grind back a quarter inch of steel to fix it. Now I keep my cheap chisels on the bench and that fancy one stays in a drawer at home. Anyone else got a story about wrecking a tool the same day they bought it?

That 150 dollar chisel thing really stings. I did almost the same thing with a 120 dollar marking gauge from a woodworking show. Got it home, went to set the depth, and the brass thumbscrew snapped clean off in my hand. It was made in some fancy shop in Vermont too. Sent it back but it took two months to get a replacement. Now I just look at it in the box, too scared to actually use it.

Funny, used to think handmade was always worth it. Not anymore.

My buddy bought a $200 hand plane from a famous maker and the chip breaker cracked the first time he tightened it. He was so mad he just hung it on his wall as a reminder.
