Warning: Those 'quick link' derailleur hanger alighers are not a cure-all

I was at a group ride in Portland last month when this guy kept chasing me down every stop saying my shifting was off. He insisted I needed one of those Park Tool alighers. Tbh I told him my dropout was straight, I had already checked it with my own method. But he was so sure I let him try it on my bike right there on the curb. He wasted 20 minutes tweaking the hanger back and forth because the tool was telling him it was bent when it was actually fine. The real problem was a sticky cable housing under my bartape. Has anyone else had one of those alighers send you on a wild goose chase?

After Portland I started checking cables first before even touching the hanger with any tool.
