Took a 'shortcut' on the PCT near Snoqualmie Pass and ended up in a real bad spot

I was a day behind schedule and saw a line on my map that looked like it cut off a big bend. The trail was clear for maybe a mile, then it just vanished into a steep, loose scree field. I slid about ten feet before catching myself on a bush, and my pack strap tore. Had to backtrack for three hours in the dark. Has anyone else had a map detail totally fail them on a major trail?

That scree field near Snoqualmie is no joke. What map were you using, and did the line you followed have an actual trail name or was it just a topo line? I've found some older forest service maps show logging roads that have been completely reclaimed by brush.

Man, that sounds rough. Lucas165 is right about that area being bad news. I had a map show a clear creek crossing once that was just a washed-out gully. Spent hours bushwhacking. That feeling when the trail just ends is the worst. Really glad you got out of there okay.
