A new guy on a site in Phoenix asked me why I always do a full 360 walk-around before I even start the engine.

Wait, a cracked tie-down plate that could've dropped a 12-ton beam? I mean, that's insane. I'd be doing a 360 walk-around for the rest of my life after seeing something like that. Your first foreman was totally right, the ground really does tell you everything. That's a story that sticks with you.

Spent $150 on a 'professional' knife sharpener that just wrecked my edge

That "foolproof" electric sharpener claim gets a lot of people. Those guides can't tell if your blade is already thin, so they just grind off the same amount every time. A good sharpening service should check the blade first, but honestly, learning your stones is slower but way more reliable in the long run.

Vent: Overheard a guy at the hardware store say 'just ask anything, someone will know' about fixing his truck.

Something no manual would ever say" is the best part. It's like the whole internet is just a giant, grumpy grandpa who remembers every weird fix from 1973.

Why does nobody talk about how messy carpet seam tape can get?

That wax paper trick from @terryj45 is smart for cleanup. Does it ever slip out from under the tape while you're working the seam, though? I'd worry about it moving and making the bond weak.

I finally started checking for included bark on every single young tree I prune

It's a pattern of small things causing big failures. You miss one detail in a tree union or a car's brake line, and it all comes apart later. Good habits are just a defense against that.
