I finally chose between a GeoCities guestbook and a simple contact form
I was rebuilding my old band's website from 1998 and had to pick between keeping the GeoCities guestbook with all those animated GIFs or swapping in a plain contact form. I went with the guestbook because it just felt RIGHT for the era, even though it takes forever to load. Has anyone else had to decide between pure nostalgia and making a retro site actually work?

Yeah I kept the spinning "@" symbol on my old band page just because it felt wrong to take it off.

brian303 wait you had a spinning @ symbol on your band page? I never even thought about adding one of those to my old band site. That thing must have been hypnotic to look at back in the day. I can see why it felt wrong to remove it though, like you were taking away a piece of internet history from that time. Those old GeoCities style decorations really grew on you after a while.

Yeah, "felt wrong to remove it" is EXACTLY how I felt about my old band's visitor counter. I kept that thing up for way too long just because it would have been like deleting a trophy or something. Honestly, sometimes you just gotta leave the old internet relics alone and let them be part of the page's history.
