Dropped $200 on a new panel and it fried my first install

I bought a new DSC PowerSeries Neo panel from a local supply house in Austin about 3 weeks ago. Hooked it up exactly like the manual said, but when I powered it on, the keypad just showed garbage characters. Turns out I got a bad board from the factory, and it took me two days of swapping parts to figure out it wasn't my wiring. Anyone else have a DOA panel straight out of the box that wasted your time?

I stopped using corner bead mudders after 15 years and went back to hand-taping every corner

Last fall on a job in Portland I realized those automatic corner tools just leave too much buildup for my taste, so now I take the extra 20 minutes per room to do it by hand and the finish looks way cleaner, has anyone else gone back to an old method after trying the new gear?

Had a brutal Tuesday where my budget got wrecked in under 4 hours

I was doing so good on my spending for March, then Tuesday hit. My car needed a new alternator at $380, my kid's school called saying she lost her lunch money envelope with $25 in it, and I forgot about a $45 auto-renewal for a software I never use. All that went down between 9am and 1pm. How do you guys bounce back from a surprise spending day like that without just giving up on the month?

Dropped a Rolleiflex at a flea market in Portland and it taught me to check every screw first.

Was just walking around with it around my neck and the lens board just fell off mid-step because the previous owner had stripped all the little brass screws and I didn't catch it, anyone else had a camera fall apart on them from a bad previous repair?

Had a lightbulb moment about my bookmarks folder full of "how to fold fitted sheets" videos

After 4 years of watching different tutorials, I finally realized I just needed to tuck the corners into each other instead of trying to make a perfect rectangle, and now my linen closet doesn't look like a laundry crime scene anymore - anyone else have a super specific bookmark rabbit hole they never thought they'd solve?

Spent a whole Tuesday evening looking for The Left Hand of Darkness at my local library. Turns out someone put it in 'Self Help' instead of 'Science Fiction'. Has anyone else found books completely misfiled like that?

Updated my mind about getting a home inspection after skipping one

I was dead set on waiving the inspection to make my offer look better in a bidding war. My realtor kept pushing me to get one anyway, so I finally agreed to a basic $400 inspection. The inspector found a hidden roof leak that would have cost like $5k to fix later. The seller ended up covering half the repair cost after I showed them the report. I honestly thought inspections were just for people who didn't know what they were looking at, but I was wrong lol. Has anyone else had an inspection save them from a big surprise?

Hot towel on a broken capillary - worst idea I ever had

I'm at my station in Seattle about 3 months ago and this client comes in with really reactive skin. She wants a hydrating facial. I grab my hot towel to do the steam step and she immediately gets this broken capillary on her cheek. Looked like a tiny red lightning bolt. I felt so bad. I told her straight up I messed up and gave her a discount on the service. She was cool about it but I learned my lesson - always check for broken caps before using heat. Anyone else had a similar oops with heat?

Gravity pour vs bottom pour ladle in our iron shop, no contest

I spent 6 months fighting with a gravity pour ladle at a shop in Toledo and slag kept getting into every third casting. Switched to a bottom pour ladle two weeks ago and my dross inclusion rate dropped from 12% down to under 2%. Has anyone else made that swap and seen similar numbers?

My aunt's comment about my necklines hit me harder than I expected

I was showing my aunt some sketches for a new spring line over coffee last Saturday. She paused at one dress and said 'that neckline is trying too hard.' She's not a designer, she works at a hardware store in Akron. But she was right. I had been adding all these extra cuts and layers thinking they looked modern, and she saw right through it. Has anyone else had a non-designer relative give feedback that actually changed how you think about a design?
