I finally tried a weird film soup recipe I saw online and it actually worked

I had a roll of Kentmere 400 that I shot at a local fair, but the photos felt flat and boring. I remembered reading about people soaking film in things like coffee or soap to add texture. I was scared to ruin the roll, but I mixed a cup of warm water with a spoon of instant coffee and a few drops of dish soap. I put the film in a jar with the mix for about 20 minutes, then washed it and let it dry overnight. When I developed it, the photos had these cool, random brown stains and soft spots that made the fair lights look dreamy. It gave the whole set a weird, old-timey feel that I really liked. I think the key was not leaving it in too long. Has anyone else tried a film soup mix that gave you good results without wrecking the film?

Just realized I was wrong about chasing a perfect 0.0005 tolerance on every part

I hit 500 parts on a run yesterday with the tolerance set to 0.001 and had zero rejects. I used to think tighter was always better, but it just added cycle time for no real gain on this job. When do you guys decide a spec is 'good enough' for the application?

Had to pick between a $2000 combi oven and a new walk-in cooler compressor last month.

The old compressor was on its last legs, but the owner wanted the new toy for the line. I pushed hard for the cooler, arguing we'd lose thousands in product if it died on a Friday. We got the compressor fixed, and sure enough, the old oven held on. Anyone else had to fight for the boring but critical repair over the shiny new gear?

Showerthought: I've been crimping my RJ31X jacks wrong for ten years.

Was on a service call in Tempe last week. Customer's phone line kept dropping the alarm signal. Saw their old installer used a different crimp pattern. Tried it. Signal strength jumped from 30% to 98% on the panel. My go-to method was crushing the wires. Anyone have a good diagram they trust for the 8-pin jack?

I finally tried watching that show everyone argued about for months

Last Tuesday, I decided to watch 'The Great Debate' anime after seeing forum threads blow up over its ending for like half a year. I binged all 12 episodes in two days, and man, I get it now. The final scene where the main character just walks away without saying anything, I mean, I sat there for a solid ten minutes just thinking. Has anyone else had a show hit them like that, where you finally see what the fuss was about?

The open floor plan trend feels forced, and I think I know why.

I was redoing my kitchen last month and kept seeing ads for open concepts. It got me thinking, why is this style so pushed? I looked into it and saw some odd links to building material sales. Now I'm telling people, check the details before you tear down walls. It could be more about money than good design.
