I thought the local library's website was useless until I needed a specific repair manual

For years I ignored the 'digital resources' link on my town library's site, figuring it was just a few e-books. Last month I needed the service manual for a 2012 HP printer at work, and on a whim I checked there. They had a full subscription to a technical database I'd never heard of, ManualsLib. I found the exact 87-page PDF in about two minutes, no login required with my library card. It saved me a call to a vendor that would have cost the company at least $50. I've since found wiring diagrams and old appliance guides there too. What's the most surprising thing you've found through your local library's online tools?

Saw the most bizarre elevator sign at a hotel in Branson last weekend

I was visiting family and staying at this big hotel off the main strip. Went to use the service elevator near the laundry room and there's a laminated sign taped to the door that says, in huge letters, 'DO NOT USE ELEVATOR IF FLOOR IS WET. USE STAIRS. MANAGEMENT.' Okay, fair warning. But then, handwritten underneath in Sharpie, someone added 'OR JUST WALK REAL CAREFUL.' I stared at it for a full minute. First, who thinks that's good advice? Second, the handwriting looked exactly like my old foreman's. Made me wonder what chain of events led to that 'clarification.' Did someone actually try it? Was there a slip and a report filed? I'm dying to know the backstory. Has anyone else come across a truly unhelpful 'fix' like that on a job?

Lost a whole afternoon to a bad thermal fuse on a Whirlpool dryer

I spent 3 hours yesterday chasing a no-heat issue on a Whirlpool dryer, model WED5000DW. I replaced the heating element first, which cost me $65, but the real problem was a $12 thermal fuse I didn't check. I should have just run the full continuity test from the start. Anyone have a good system for diagnosing these so you don't waste parts and time?

Why does nobody talk about how much water those floral foam bricks waste?

I was reading a report from a university extension program last week, and it said a standard brick of wet foam can hold about a gallon of water. That's a lot of water just sitting there, and most of it evaporates before the flowers even get it. I mean, maybe it's just me, but I've switched to using chicken wire and tape for most of my arrangements now and the flowers last just as long. Has anyone else looked into this or tried to cut down on foam use?
