I finally switched from a big bank to a local credit union for my checking account.

My old account at National Bank had a $12 monthly fee unless I kept $1,500 in it. My new one at First Community Credit Union has no monthly fee at all and refunds up to $10 in ATM fees every month. I'm saving over $140 a year just by moving my money. Anyone else made a simple switch that saved them a bunch?

Serious question, did anyone else's local library have those weird internet terminals in the late 90s?

I was at the main branch of the Columbus library yesterday, and they still have one of those old beige computer desks tucked in a corner. It's empty now, but it took me right back to 1998. You had to sign up for a 30 minute slot on a clipboard, and the monitor was this huge CRT that hummed. The whole thing ran on some custom software that basically just opened Netscape Navigator. I remember the sound of the dial-up modem screeching through the library speakers because the staff never turned the volume down. It felt like you were launching a spaceship just to check your Hotmail. The connection was so slow that your time would run out before a single image-heavy Geocities page fully loaded. What was the weirdest public internet setup you guys had to use back then?

My shop in Toledo still uses the old paper repair orders and I think it's better

Last month, a storm knocked out our internet for two days. The guys with the tablets were stuck, but we just kept writing on the carbon copies. We got through 12 cars that day with zero delays. I know the digital systems track everything, but when the power goes out, a pen and paper still work. Has anyone else had to fall back on the old ways recently?

The week our town's river flooded in March

I mean, we've had rain before, but last March the river near my house in Boone rose over 8 feet in two days. It washed out the community garden we'd just planted and covered the bike path in mud and trash. The cleanup took about 40 volunteers three full weekends to get things back to normal. Has anyone else had a local climate event that just felt like a big, sudden wake-up call?

A homeowner in Tacoma told me my cable runs looked sloppy compared to the electrician's work.

Now I spend an extra 20 minutes per job on neat, parallel runs and proper strapping, so has anyone found a specific type of strap that holds better in cold attics?

Chatting with my friend Sam about zines at the coffee shop yesterday really got me thinking.

She said she only makes zines about things that scare her a little, like her anxiety or a bad breakup. I've always stuck to safe topics like movie reviews. Hearing that made me realize I've been playing it too safe. Has anyone else started a personal zine that felt a bit risky to share?

My friend's first Python script crashed because they used '=' instead of '==' in an if statement.

They spent two hours debugging before I spotted it. That single character difference is such a common trip-up when you're starting out. What other tiny syntax errors gave you the most grief early on?
