Heads up on those new 'self-watering' foam blocks versus the old school wet pack

I tested both for a wedding arch last weekend, and the foam dried out in under 8 hours in the sun. The wet floral foam in a bucket kept everything fresh until the end of the night. Has anyone found a reliable brand for outdoor summer work?

My first attempt with those foam blocks killed a whole flat of petunias. I've just accepted that I'm not smart enough for anything labeled "self-watering". The old bucket method is ugly, but at least it works.

Yeah I saw a thing that said those foam blocks can actually hold too much water and drown the roots. They're not as foolproof as the box makes them sound. Sometimes the old way is the right way.
