Just realized most guys are setting post holes way too shallow for 6 foot privacy fences

Saw a crew dig 18 inch holes for a 6 foot cedar fence last week and tried telling them you need at least 30 inches here in clay soil or the frost heave will wreck it by spring, has anyone else had to redo a job because someone skimped on depth?

30 inches is the way to go in heavy clay, I learned that one the hard way after a fence leaned like the Tower of Pisa! Three feet deep with some gravel at the bottom has held up perfectly through three winters now.

Nah, gravel just creates a water trap in clay. Better off with straight concrete.
