So I hit 50 sample garments before my first real collection launch

I had no idea I'd made that many until I counted them last week. Each one taught me something about darts or seam placement that I couldn't have learned from a sketchbook. Has anyone else gone way over their first production estimate?

The first time I tried to make a dress with princess seams, I ended up with 12 muslins before I got it right. I kept thinking, "Okay, this one is close, just tweak the shoulder a little." Then the armhole would be off, or the bust dart would point weird. I swear I could have clothed a small army with all the cotton muslin I burned through. But you know what? That dress still hangs in my closet today, and every time I look at it I remember exactly why I needed to cut that twelfth one. It's like each mistake gets sewn into the fabric of your brain somehow.

Twelve muslins? Girl, I would’ve thrown that thing out the window after the third one.
