Why does nobody talk about the difference between cheap and good quality wood filler?

I patched a baseboard in my Tucson kitchen with a $4 tub from the big box store, and it shrank and cracked after two weeks. I redid it with a name brand filler my contractor friend recommended, and that patch has been perfect for over six months now. Has anyone else found a specific brand that actually holds up long term?

So what was the name brand filler your friend told you to use? I've had the same problem with the cheap stuff... it always seems to dry out and pull away from the edges. I'm trying to fix some old door frames and don't want to do it twice.

Tell me about it, @tyler368, that shrinking is the worst. My buddy swears by DAP Fast 'n Final, says it sands down smooth and doesn't crack like the bargain bin stuff. Is your door frame getting a lot of direct sunlight, because that heat can really mess with how any filler dries. What kind of sanding method are you planning to use after it sets?
