Found a flyer for a free computer class at the laundromat board that actually changed my week

Last Tuesday I was killing time waiting for my clothes to dry and this old bulletin board had a torn flyer for a free Excel class at the library. I figured why not, I've been wanting to learn formulas for my side hustle tracking sales. The class was run by a retired accountant named Frank who showed me how to use pivot tables in about 10 minutes. Now I'm actually excited to organize my numbers instead of dreading it. Have you guys ever found a random class or workshop on a board that actually ended up being useful?

My book club went from fighting over chapter themes to full-on conspiracy theories in 3 months

We started off debating whether the author meant the red door as a symbol or just a red door, but by month three Linda printed out a 12-page manifesto tying the plot to a local zoning law from 1987. Has anyone else's book club completely derail into weird tangents?

Update: The guy at the laundromat who fixed my dryer vent theory with one sentence

Saw a handwritten note taped to the community board about dryer lint fires, and when I mentioned it to the old-timer folding his shirts, he just said "exhaust runs uphill if you let it" and now I check my vent every 3 months instead of never, has anyone else had a random stranger change how they do something small?

Vent: Old timer told me my ladder placement was all wrong

Guy with 30 years on the river said I was setting my ladder too steep, like 70 degrees instead of the safe 75. Made me redo it on a bank near Baton Rouge last Tuesday and now my knees don't ache after a 10 hour shift. Anyone else get called out on small stuff that actually saved your back?

Rant: I used to think a regular comb was fine for detangling, but a wide-tooth one changed my whole wash day.

For months I was fighting with this one client's thick, curly hair, spending almost 45 minutes just on the pre-wash detangle. My mentor saw me struggling last week and handed me her wide-tooth comb. It glided right through the wet, conditioned hair without any pulling. I finished the detangle in under 15 minutes and my client said it was the most comfortable wash she'd ever had in a salon. Anyone have a favorite brand for these, or is a basic one from the beauty supply good enough?

Got schooled on post hole depth at a job in Duluth last winter.

We were setting a line of cedar posts on a slope, ground was half frozen. I was going by the old 'one-third in the ground' rule. The homeowner, an older guy who used to build docks, came out and said, 'You're gonna get heave. Go another eight inches, hit solid.' We argued for a minute, but I did it. That extra depth made all the difference come spring thaw. Anyone else run into a local who knew the land better than the book?

PSA: Tried a new way to set corner posts on a sloped job last week

I had a job in the hills near Bakersfield with a nasty 15 degree slope. I used to set the end posts first and run a line, but this time I set the high corner post, then used a laser level to mark the exact height for the low corner before digging its hole. It cut my measuring time in half and the line was perfect on the first pull. What's your go-to method for keeping a fence straight on a big hill?

Shoutout to the park ranger who told me to pack a headlamp for a simple day hike in the Smokies last October.

We got turned around on an unmarked trail after sunset, and that $25 Petzl headlamp was the only thing that kept us from a cold, scary night in the woods. Anyone have a go-to backup light they never hike without?

The amount of people who don't set their UCS before starting a drawing is wild

I keep seeing drawings come across my desk where the model is drawn at some crazy angle or way off in space. It's always because someone started sketching in the default view without setting their User Coordinate System first. I had to fix a whole set of shop drawings for a steel frame last month where every single elevation was tilted 15 degrees. It took me a full day to rotate and realign everything. It's such a basic step that saves so much headache down the line. How do you guys make sure your UCS is set right before you dive into a new project?

Rant: People keep using the wrong torque on the D-sub connectors in our LRUs

I've seen three different techs at our MRO in Mobile over-tighten the 9-pin connectors on the Collins Pro Line 21 radios this month. They're cranking them down like they're lug nuts, but the spec sheet clearly says 12 to 15 inch-pounds. It's causing cracked backshells and intermittent faults on the bench. How do you guys make sure your crew actually reads the maintenance manual before grabbing a tool?
