Vent: My friend told me to ignore email marketing and focus only on social

He said email was dead and I should put all my budget into Instagram ads. I listened and ran a $500 campaign for my small online store last month. The ads got likes but zero sales, while my old email list from six months ago still brings in about two orders a week. Has anyone else had a social-only plan backfire like this? What's a better split for a small budget?

Saw a custom forge setup at the county fair in Springfield that used a repurposed truck brake drum

The guy running it said he gets a more even heat for shaping shoes than with his old propane rig, and it only cost him about $30 in scrap parts to build.

Lately I've noticed a bunch of newer butchers at the shop spending way too much time on the fine grit stones, like 8000 grit and up. They're chasing that mirror edge you see online. The problem is, for breaking down primals and trimming fat, you need a toothy edge that bites, not just a polished one. I saw a guy spend 45 minutes on a single boning knife last week, and it was slipping on silverskin right after. Anyone else run into this and have a good way to explain the practical edge geometry to an apprentice?

Tried to teach my dad Ticket to Ride, he thought the trains were for building a wall.

We were at my place last Sunday, just me, him, and the board. I set up the USA map. He's looking at the plastic trains and goes, 'So, the goal is to connect your cities and block the other guy, right? Build a big wall across the country.' I had to explain three times that no, you're making routes, not barriers. He spent the whole game trying to cut me off from Seattle to Miami, muttering about 'strategic borders.' Has anyone else had a family member completely misinterpret a game's core idea in a hilarious way?

I used to think dried beans were just a hassle, but a friend's tip changed my whole week

For the longest time, I avoided dried beans because I thought the soaking and cooking took forever and wasn't worth the effort. I'd just grab the canned ones, even though they cost more. Then my buddy, who cooks for a family of four on a tight budget, showed me his method. He soaks a whole bag overnight, cooks them all in his slow cooker on Sunday, and then freezes them in two-cup portions. I tried it with a two-pound bag of black beans that cost me $2.50. After doing the math, I realized I got the same amount as about six cans, which would have been over $6. The texture is way better, and I control the salt. Now I always have a cheap protein base ready to go for tacos, soups, or just over rice. Has anyone else found a simple prep trick that made a cheap staple way more useful?

Spent two days trying to get a clean weld on a wrought iron repair

Had to fix an old gate hinge, and the wrought iron kept cracking right next to my bead. I was using my normal 7018 rod, but it just wouldn't fuse right. Finally dug into an old book and found out wrought iron has a lot of slag strings inside that mess with the weld pool. Switched to a 309 stainless rod at lower heat, and it worked on the first try. Anyone else run into this with antique ironwork?

Shoutout to the guy who said to always check the bottom of the box

I bought a box of old tools at a yard sale for 20 bucks, mostly junk. I was ready to toss the whole thing after a quick look. Then I remembered a comment on here about checking under the paper lining. I dumped it out and found a small, flat brass case taped to the bottom. Inside was a 1923 silver dollar, mint condition. It paid for the tools about fifty times over. Anyone else find a hidden bonus like that?

Rant: my dad told me to skip the vapor barrier under my new tile floor

He's a contractor in Phoenix and swore up and down that with our dry climate, a vapor barrier under tile in a slab-on-grade house was a waste of money and time. He said, 'You're in the desert, not Seattle.' So I listened, saved the $200 on materials, and laid the tile directly on the slab in my kitchen. Fast forward eight months, and I'm seeing efflorescence and a few tiles starting to feel loose. A buddy who does tile here in ABQ came over, took one look, and said the moisture from the slab is wicking up. Now I'm looking at pulling up a section to fix it. Has anyone else in the Heights or similar areas had this happen, or was my dad's advice just flat wrong for our specific soil?

Vent: A stripped screw on a Minolta X-700's bottom plate cost me 3 hours yesterday.

I had to carefully drill it out with a 1.5mm bit after my extractor set failed, so what's your go-to method for dealing with seized tiny screws in old bodies?

PSA: I thought letting bread dough sit overnight was just a waste of time.

My recipe said to leave it in the fridge for 12 hours, so I tried it last night with some doubt. Pulled it out this morning and the dough was bubbly and smelled amazing, way better than my usual 2-hour rise. The loaf I baked had a crust and flavor I've never gotten before. Anyone else have a simple step they thought was pointless that actually changed the game?
