I thought buying old web domains was a smart move, but it cost me $500

I spent that money on a bunch of expired .com names I thought were cool, like a site from 2002 about hamster fan clubs. I figured I could archive them myself, but the Wayback Machine already had perfect copies. Has anyone else wasted cash trying to save stuff that was already saved online?

My aunt still has her Geocities page up for her pug, Mr. Snuffles. It has a visitor counter and everything. It feels like the whole internet used to be just people's weird little hobbies on ugly websites. Now everything is so clean and same-y on a few big sites. I miss when you could really tell a person made something.
