I finally believe those old archive.org rabbit holes about early web design competitions

Found a cached page from 1999 where someone won "Best Use of Frames" and I laughed until I saw the actual site, it was genuinely impressive for the time, made me realize we had real creativity before templates took over. Has anyone else found an old contest entry that actually holds up?

Oh man, I spent way too much time in high school trying to win one of those "Best Personal Homepage" contests... my entry had a neon green background with a MIDI file that auto-played and like twelve animated GIFs of construction workers... I thought I was a genius. Looking back at what I submitted makes me cringe so hard, but you're right, some of those old winners actually had real thought behind them, not just templates slapped together. Frames were a nightmare to build by hand but when someone actually pulled it off it was kind of impressive.
