I stopped using hashtags after a conference in Austin last year

I was at a digital marketing conference in Austin and sat through a talk where the speaker showed data from 50 brand accounts. She proved hashtags on Instagram posts actually hurt reach after 5 tags. I tested it myself for 2 months on my client accounts and saw engagement go up 15% with zero hashtags. Has anyone else seen this work or am I just getting lucky with my niche?

50 hashtags and you're surprised less people wanted to see a wall of spam. Sounds like the speaker finally cracked the code that everyone figured out back in 2018. But hey, congrats on the 15% bump, just don't tell the hashtag bros or they'll have to find real jobs.

The 15% bump is real but let's be honest @karen275, that 15% is probably just bots and people accidentally double tapping. I tried the whole hashtag spam thing back in 2019 on Instagram and got 200 followers in a week but none of them ever commented or liked anything after that. Just dead accounts inflating the numbers. The algorithm has been punishing that behavior for years now so it's weird to see someone acting like they discovered fire.
