I used to over-polish every digital painting until a client called it 'soulless'
Idk, I spent years doing 20+ layers of blending and texture on every piece I made. Then about 6 months ago a client I was working with on a book cover told me my latest draft felt 'too clean' and he missed the rough sketch energy. At first I was mad but I went back and looked at my older stuff from 2021 and he was kinda right. Now I force myself to stop at maybe 5 layers and keep some of the brush strokes visible. Has anyone else dealt with a client hating on a style you thought was your best?

The rough sketch energy is real, once I started leaving the construction lines visible my commissions picked up because people said it looked more alive. What made you finally go back and check your older work?

200 pages in, and I have to disagree a bit. Leaving construction lines visible can work for some styles, but for me it just looks unfinished when I go back and see them sitting there. I finally checked my older work after a client pointed out a line that didn't make sense in the final piece, and it pushed me to clean things up more.
