Lost $250 worth of digital art because a hosting site shut down overnight
I had all my old digital paintings hosted on a site called PhotoCabin that I'd been using since 2011. Went to pull some files for a print order last month and got nothing but a blank white page with a generic 404 message. The worst part is I didn't have local backups for about 150 pieces because I trusted their promise to keep archives forever. Found some cached thumbnails through Wayback Machine but the full resolution files are just gone. That's close to 250 bucks in commissions and prints I can never get back. Stupid of me to not have a second copy somewhere else I guess. Anyone else lose a big chunk of work to a site that vanished without warning?

Happens with everything now not just hosting sites. I had a whole music collection on some streaming service that got bought out and my playlists just evaporated. Same with old photo albums on myspace back in the day and recipes I saved on a cooking app that shut down. Feels like every few months something I rely on disappears and takes my stuff with it. The whole cloud storage thing is great until it isnt and you realize youre just renting space from someone who can pull the plug whenever they want.

Yeah exactly @keithyoung. Nothing's really yours anymore.
