Overheard a guy at the library talk about writing prompts that changed my view

I always thought writing prompts were just for beginners or people who couldn't come up with their own ideas. Then last Tuesday I was at the downtown library and overheard a guy telling his friend he used prompts to break out of a slump he'd been in for 3 years. He said something like 'prompts aren't training wheels, they're just a different road to drive on.' I went home and tried one from a forum, and I wrote 800 words before dinner. Has anyone else had a prompt pull them out of a dry spell?

Read the same thing in a writing blog actually.

Yeah I saw something similar on a writing podcast actually. They were saying how if you write things down by hand instead of typing, you remember them way better. Something about how your brain processes it differently. Makes sense though, like when I jot down notes for a story I'm working on, I can picture where on the page I wrote it. Can't do that with a keyboard. So I try to do at least some of my writing longhand now, even if it's just for the rough draft or brainstorming.
