Shoutout to the old timer at the Port of Oakland who showed me his hand signals from the 70s
He said 'kid, back then we didn't have these fancy radios, just a good arm and a guy you trusted not to drop a 20-ton beam on your head' and it really stuck with me about how much the job's changed.

That "guy you trusted" part is the real key. You can have all the tech in the world, but if you don't have that trust with the person you're working with, it's all just noise. Those old hand signals built that focus into the job.

But what if the tech itself helps build that trust? Clear communication tools can actually make teamwork stronger, not just add noise. Sometimes better tools let you focus on the job even more.

Ever notice how we keep trying to solve people problems with new tools? Like putting a nicer radio in a car with a bad engine.
