PSA: Stop running the boom extension with the load still swinging

Saw a guy at a site near Houston last week try to boom out while his load was still spinning. Cable almost whipped right into the cab. I've been running cranes for about 8 years now and that's one of those things that just gets me. Why do people think it's okay to move before the load settles? Has anyone else had a close call from this?

Yeah but here's a thing nobody's bringing up - the telehandler or crane model might actually be part of the problem. Some of the newer machines have these dampeners and load sway control systems that give operators a false sense of security, like the computer's gonna catch the swing for them. Take that with a grain of salt though, I'm just saying what I've heard from a few mechanics who've worked on both old and new rigs.

and you saw him do that with the load still spinning? I've been teaching kids for years and I still can't wrap my head around that level of stupid in a grown adult. A cable whipping into the cab isn't just a close call, that's a direct ticket to the hospital or worse. I had a guy on a site near my school's construction project try the same thing, cable snapped and took out a lunch trailer window. People forget the physics of a swinging load, it's not a toy.
