I finally stopped using my load cells wrong after 8 years on the job

For the longest time I always zeroed out my load cells before every single lift. Got called out by a senior operator on a job in Houston back in March who pointed out I was recalibrating more than actually checking the setup. Turns out I was throwing off the readings by zeroing when the hook was still holding rigging. Now I only zero with the hook empty on the ground and my numbers have been way more consistent. Anyone else get taught the wrong way to set up their load indicators early on?

Eight years is a long time to be doing something the wrong way without anyone saying anything. Reminds me of how a lot of people set their GPS before driving somewhere and forget to check the actual route once they're on the road. They just trust the machine without thinking about what it's actually telling them. Same thing with load cells you were trusting the zero but not the conditions around it. It's a good lesson in how we all get stuck in routines that feel right but are secretly working against us.

That GPS comparison hits home. I started double checking my own assumptions after a similar mess up.
