Had to choose between a static line or a tag line for a tricky lift yesterday

We were setting a big HVAC unit on a roof in Phoenix, and the wind was picking up (you know how that gets). My lead gave me the call, static line for a straight drop or a tag line for more control. I went with the tag line, had my ground guy on it to keep it from spinning. It added maybe 10 minutes to the whole process, but it went down smooth as butter, no drama. Anyone else have a strong preference for one over the other in gusty conditions?

Wait, isn't a static line the one that's fixed length, so you can't really control swing? I think you might mean a load line versus a tag line. The main hoist line is for the lift, the tag line is for control. In wind, I'm always using a tag line if there's any room for it. Let the crane do the lifting and use the tag to fight the spin. Seen too many loads get away from guys who tried to just muscle it on the main line alone.

Honestly I used to be one of those guys who thought a tag line was just extra gear to trip over. Watching a buddy lose control of a steel beam in a crosswind changed my mind real fast though. @the_wren is right on the money, let the machine do the hard part and keep everything steady with a tag.

Totally get what you're saying about the tag line! My brain just short-circuited on the terms for a second. I once tried to guide a big aluminum duct without one, thinking I could just push it. Ended up spinning it like a top in a light breeze and looked like a complete fool trying to catch it. Never making that mistake again, a tag line is non-negotiable now.
